Facilities for under Two year olds.
The Under 2’s Unit accommodates children from 3 months to 2 years of age, with a ratio of one
adult to three children; the unit consists of 2 activity rooms. The unit is a happy, busy and at
times noisy room. Our aim is for the children to play, have fun and learn new skills, whilst
working closely with parents to ensure that the children’s home and nursery routine remains
similar.
The staff in this unit have lots of experience with this age group and are aware of their needs,
while still offering support and encouragement with those first steps, feeding and language
development.
At your initial settling in session the room leader will go through with you yourchild’s routines,
dietary needs and developmental progress. We aim to work with parents, keeping a similar
routine to that in their own home environment. This helps the settling in process both for the
children and mum, and also helps the child to adapt to nursery life easily.
The emphasis in this room is ‘Learning through play’. The children in this room get very messy
with lots of activities based around water, sand, ooblic, dough, painting, sticking as well as other
sensory based activities.
Activities are planned to stimulate the child in order to help them develop their sensory, social
and communication skills, whilst exploring their environment with brightly coloured age
appropriate activities and resources. Activities include puzzles, construction and lots of hand
and eye co-ordinated activities. Imaginative play, story time, singing and more.
Weather permitting and with parents permission, the Under 2’s unit regularly go out for walks
to the park, feed the ducks or into town to encourage social skills and awareness of the world
around them.
We provide nappies and wet wipes for your child, but ask that you provide formula milk for us to
make up bottles each time they attend, alternatively expressed breast milk. All other food is
provided by the nursery.
In this unit the children have morning and afternoon snack within the room, lunch is served in
the 2-3’s, which gives the children an opportunity to mix and socialise with slightly older
children, gain confidence in a different area of the nursery and also allows them to become
familiar with the 2-3’s room.
During this stage of a child’s development, children may still require a sleep. We provide the
children with sleep mats, and a blanket as required, similar to their routine at home. If your
child would prefer to sleep in a cot at this age, we are able to accommodate your child’s needs.
Facilities for Two to Three Year Olds
The 2-3’s room is for children from 2 years to 3 years, with a ratio of one adult to four
children, and a maximum of twelve children at any one time.
This is a busy and active room, through a mixture of stimulating activities and free play the
children are encouraged to develop their language and listening skills, gaining confidence through
social play with their peers.
Activities include construction, puzzles, imaginative play in the home corner, building on gross
motor and fine motor skills plus many more.
We provide this age group with many craft activities which include, painting, sticking, Ooblick,
dough as well as other sensory creative experiences.
Each week, no matter what the weather is like, the children in this room go out on a ‘Welly
Walk’, we ask that you supply your child with a pair of wellies and a change of clothes as they do
like to splash in puddles!!
When in this room, children usually start the potty/toilet training experience. All we ask is that
you let your child’s key worker or room leader know exactly what your routine is at home and we
will follow it as best as we can. Please make sure that you bring in a supply of clean clothing
during this period as there are bound to be accidents! We are happy to provide support,
assistance and guidance throughout this period to support both you and your child.
Facilities in the Pre-school Room
Children move into the pre-school room the month after their 3rd birthday, we work on a ratio
of 1 adult to 8 children with a maximum of 24 children.
Each morning we have Christian Education for 20 minutes, during this time we have stories,
music and singing. This is an activity which your can opt out of if you wish.
The children are encouraged to move around the room freely, participating in creative/craft
activities & construction, activities and equipment are available to encourage gross and fine
motor skills. The children also have available to them a home corner, where they can experience
different cultures, use their imagination to be in an office, café or home environment etc.
The children in this room still enjoy free play but the sessions are more structured to introduce
pencil control, letter formation and basic numeracy skills.
The activities we offer the children are both individual and group based; this encourages the
children to learn the importance of sharing, taking turns and being polite.
Each day the children participate in physical activities which include, throwing, catching,
balancing, music & Movement, this will be inside or out in the garden depending on the weather.
Once a week the children take part in a PE Lesson structured similar to those the children will
experience at school.
The children are encouraged to build on their social and communication skills in preparation for
their transition on to school.
Key Person
When your child starts at King’s Day Nursery School, they will be assigned a ‘Key Person’. Your
child’s Room Leader will introduce you to your designated Key Person, as well as the other staff
who will be based in their room and will have direct contact with you.
Your child’s Key Person will discuss with you, your child’s day and their progression through
nursery.
Your child’s Key Person will compile a Learning Journey for your child, with your permission. The
Learning Journey will include observations carried out on your child, planned activities, your
child’s developmental progress and key examples of work your child has created. In addition to
the Learning Journey, we will compile a ‘Busy book’ which will include pieces of work your child
would like to include in their book. The Busy Book will be presented to you to keep as your child
moves up to the next room, with the Learning Journey following her/him through the nursery
until they leave.
Your child’s Key Person will build a good relationship with both you and your child, which will
allow clear 2 way communication between you and us; this will benefit your child as they progress
through the nursery.
